Answer: The 5 basic types of “material” offerings are:

1.) Bulls: as burnt offerings (Vayikra 1:3 – 9), as “wellbeing/Peace” offerings, male and female (Vayikra 3:1 – 5), and as sin offerings (Vayikra 4:3 – 12, 13 – 21);

2.) Sheep (distinguishing between male and female): as burnt offerings (Vayikra 1:10 – 13), as “wellbeing”/“Peace” offerings (Vayikra 3:6 – 11), females as sin offerings, (Vayikra 4:32 – 35), and females as purification offerings (Vayikra 5:6);

r.) Turning the bird into smoke.

Answer:

a.) “If his offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, he shall choose his offering from turtledoves or pigeons.” (Vayikra 1:14);

b.) “The priest shall bring it to the altar,” (Vayikra 1:15);

c.) “pinch off its head,” (Vayikra 1:15);

d.) “and turn it into smoke on the altar;” (Vayikra 1:15);

e.) “and its blood shall be drained out against the side of the altar.” (Vayikra 1:15);

f.) “He shall remove its crop with its contents,” (Vayikra 1:16);

g.) “and cast it into the place of the ashes, at the east side of the altar.” (Vayikra 1:16);

h.) “The priest shall tear it open by its wings, without severing it,” (Vayikra 1:17);

i.) “and turn it into smoke on the altar, upon the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, a pleasing odor to the Lord.” (Vayikra 1:17).

4.) Can you match: the object (being sprinkled, smeared, or otherwise placed), with the location (where it is being sprinkled, smeared, or otherwise placed)?

Objects: Locations:

1.) crop of bird’s neck; a.) the innards of Aaron and his sons;

2.) blood from the bulls, sheep, and goats b.) the horns on the incense altar;

provided as burnt offerings; c.) the ash heap on the East side of altar;

3.) blood from bulls provided for sin offering; d.) the atmosphere;

4.) bulls’ hides and remnants from sin offering; e.) the laver;

5.) smoke from offerings; f.) all sides of the altar;

6.) lepers g.) banishment outside the camp;

7.) water to wash legs and entrails of h.) the ash heap outside the camp;

bulls for burnt offering; i.) a griddle;

8.) grain offerings mixed with oil; j.) a deep frying pan.

9.) oil cooked inside grain flour;

10.) grain flour cooked within oil.

Answer:

1.) c.): The crop of the bird’s neck is placed on the ash heap on the East side of the altar (Vayikra 1:16);

2.) f.): The blood from the bulls, sheep, and goats, provided as burnt offerings, are dashed against all sides of the altar (Vayikra 1:5, 11);

3.) b): The blood from the bulls provided for a sin offering is smeared along the horns of the incense altar and sprinkled in front of the curtain of the Mishkan (Vayikra 4:6 – 7, 17 – 18);

4.) h.): The bulls’ hides and remnants from the sin offering are piled within the ash heaps outside of the camp (Vayikra 4:11 – 12, 20 – 21);

5.) d.): The smoke from the offerings presumably enters into the atmosphere (Vayikra 1:9, 13, 17; 2:2, 9, 16; 3:5, 11, 16; 4:10, 12, 19, 21, 26, 31, 35; 5:12);

6.) g.): Whilst is it outside the explicit scope of Parshah Vayikra, lepers are banished outside the camp (Vayikra 13:45 – 46);

7.) e.): Whilst there is an absence of any explicit description of such, any whilst anyone is welcome to share information to the contrary, there is the tenuous presumption that the water stored in the laver (washbasin) for Aaron and his sons to wash, is also utilised to perform the ceremonial washing of the offerings (Vayikra 1:9; Shmot 30:17 – 21)

8.) a.): A portion of the grain burnt offerings are provided for Aaron and his sons to consume (Vayikra 2:1 – 3);

9.) i.): Grain flour that is cooked with oil inside of it is cooked on a griddle, as brittle cakes (Vayikra 2:6);

10.) j.): Grain flour that is cooked inside of oil is cooked within a deep fryer pan, as softer dough (Vayikra 2:7);

And, arguably, there is some potential multiplicity amidst this mixing in matching, whereby the grain flour (within options #9.) and #10.)) may be matched with option a.), and water may be matched with the option of evaporation within the environment, and additionally.

5.) Can you distinguish which ingredients are prohibited and which ingredients are required, for the burnt grain offerings: a.) oil, b.) frankincense, c.) yeast, d.) honey, e.) salt, and, f.) manna?

Answer:

a.) Oil is required (Vayikra 2:1);

b.) Frankincense is required (Vayikra 2:1);

c.) Yeast is prohibited (Vayikra 2:11);

d.) Honey is prohibited (Vayikra 2:11);

e.) Salt is required (Vayikra 2:13);

f.) Manna may be considered as an “inapplicable” material for the consideration of offerings, and is actually absent from being referenced within Parshah Vayikra; it is described elsewhere within the Torah, including: Bamidbar 11:7 – 9.

6.) Can you decipher the correct sequence of the description of the process of offering grain as a burnt offering?

m.) Selecting choice flour;

n.) Pouring oil on the flour;

o.) Laying frankincense on the flour;

p.) Presenting flour to Aaron’s sons;

m.) Taking grain offering to priest;

r.) Taking grain offering to altar;

s.) Taking a portion of the grain offering;

t.) Turning portion of grain offering into smoke;

u.) Providing remainder of grain offering to Aaron and his sons.

Answer:

The literal description maintains the proceeding sequence:

a.) “When a person presents an offering of grain to the Lord, his offering shall be of choice flour;” (Vayikra 2:1);

b.) “he shall pour oil upon it,” (Vayikra 2:1);

c.) “lay frankincense on it,” (Vayikra 2:1);

d.) “and present it to Aaron’s sons, the priests.” (Vayikra 2:2);

e.) “The priest shall scoop out of it a handful of its choice flour and oil, as well as all of its frankincense;” (Vayikra 2:2);

f.) “and this token portion he shall turn into smoke on the altar, as a gift of pleasing odor to the Lord.” (Vayikra 2:3);

g.) “And the remainder of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons, a most holy portion from the Lord’s gifts.” (Vayikra 2:3);

The description then includes 3 different options for actually cooking the flour mixture of the grain offering:

h.) Option 1: “When you present an offering of grain baked in the oven, it shall be of choice flour; unleavened cakes with oil mixed in, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.” (Vayikra 2:4);

i.) Option 2 (Step 1): “If your offering is a grain offering on a griddle, it shall be of choice flour with oil mixed in, unleavened.” (Vayikra 2:5);

j.) Option 2 (Step 2): “Break it into bits” (Vayikra 2:6);

k.) Option 2 (Step 3): “and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering.” (Vayikra 2:6);

l.) Option 3: “If your offering is a grain offering in a pan, it shall be made of choice flour in oil.” (Vayikra 2:7);

The description then seems to repeat the initial instructions regarding the general process of the grain offering:

m.) “When you present to the Lord a grain offering that is made in any of these ways, it shall be brought to the priest,” (Vayikra 2:8);

n.) “who shall take it up to the altar.” (Vayikra 2:8);

o.) “The priest shall remove the token portion from the grain offering,” (Vayikra 2:9);

p.) “and turn it into smoke on the altar as a gift, of pleasing odor to the Lord.” (Vayikra 2:9);

q.) “And the remainder of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons, a most holy portion from the Lord’s gifts.” (Vayikra 2:10).

12.) Can you discern (5) socioeconomic classes that can arguably be distinguished from the different requirements described for the offerings within this Parshah?

Answer: Within the described requirements for the purification offering, it may be considered that there are 3 distinct socioeconomic classes:

1.) Men who can only afford grain for a purification offering (Vayikra 5:11 – 13);

2.) Men who can only afford 2 birds for a purification offering (Vayikra 5:7 – 10);

3.) Men who can afford a female goat/sheep for a purification offering (Vayikra 5:5 – 6);

Additionally, the described requirements for the sin offering suggest additional socioeconomic distinctions, similarly based upon the animals being sacrificed; amidst this, it may be presumed that all the man included within the 3 previously listed classes may also qualify as “ordinary” men within the community who are required to provide a female goat or sheep as a sin offering (Vayikra 4:27 – 35); yet, there are 2 additional socioeconomic classes that may be inferred from additional distinctions (and whilst these distinctions are intrinsically “economic” in nature, these 2 classes may also be perceived as political/religious distinctions, rather than necessarily “socioeconomic” distinctions):

4.) A leader of the community who is required to provide a male goat for the sin offering (Vayikra 4:22 – 26);

5.) A priest who is required to provide a bull for the sin offering (Vayikra 4:3 – 12).

Discussion Questions:

Within Parshah Vayikra, the rules for offering animal sacrifices are described in detail; this, arguably, seems to be one of the first occasions, within the Torah, that Adonai specifically commands the sacrifice of a living being; what are the tangible and esoteric connexions between the animal sacrifices described within Vayikra, and the previous communication that Adonai gives to Avraham to sacrifice Yitzak? How does this compare with the different offerings provided by Cain and Abel?

Aside from relinquishing a portion of an individual’s material wealth/prosperity, what are the intrinsic characteristics, and esoteric significance, within the act of offering? Is it a penalty and/or a gift, and/or simply a tax; and to (W)hom? Are there additional means through which to manifest the significance and purpose of the sacrifice?

How does the sacrifice of an animal compare with the observance of Shabbat? And whilst both seem to intentional and tangibly “detract” from an individual’s material pursuits, what are some of the intrinsic differences between Shabbat and the sacrifice; what respective benefits does an individual gain from the practise of each, and what detriments does an individual experience from each of these practises?

The command of “laying hands” on the head of the animal being sacrificed, and the traditional practise of “laying hands” on the head of a couple’s children, seem to be disturbingly similar, and again render considerations regarding Avraham and Yitzak; what are some fundamatal distinctions within these 2 practices, and what is the appropriate congruency?

Amidst the wandering in the dessert, there is the presumption that the Israelites live of the manna on a daily basis (rather than actually growing crops); yet there is also the presumption that the Israelites continue to herd the cattle; so do the cattle eat the manna, as well? Is there vegetation that the animals are able to eat that the Israelites are precluded from eating; and amidst appropriate vegetation existing for both the animals and the Israelites, how is the decision made to determine the manner in which that vegetation is utilised: to feed the animals or to feed the Israelites?

What is the significance within keeping the fat within the Peace offering of a cattle, yet removing the fat from the Peace offering of a goat or sheep?

If an individual abstains from personally eating animal flesh, is it necessary for that individual to continue offering animal flesh? Amidst the allowances and adaptations for materially destitute individuals to make an offering, are there similar allowances and adaptations for vegetarians and vegans? Why does Adonai favour the offering provided by Abel rather than the offering provided by Cain?

What are the significance and the implications within the distinct sin offerings instructed for the different categories of people amongst the Israelites?

What are the tangible and esoteric implications and significance within the adjusted required offerings based upon a man’s material wealth? The distinctions of leadership within a community seem to suggest coinciding distinctions of the “intensity”/“severity” of that man’s crime? Can the severity of a man’s sins be measured by the “heft” of the sacrifice that he offers? Do a “poor” man’s sins have less harm within the Universe than a “rich” man’s sins? Are there any “High Priests” that can only provide grain for a sin offering?

What confluence and dissonance exist between the practise of spreading the blood of sacrifices around the Mishkan and the prohibition from actually consuming the blood of an animal?
